The Journey of KC Unidos Federal Credit Union
Founded in 1941 as the KC Terminal Railroad Credit Union, KC Unidos Federal Credit Union has a rich history deeply rooted in serving the community. Over the years, it has undergone significant transformations to better cater to the evolving needs of its members and has become a symbol of financial inclusion and community support.
Initially established in the Kansas City stockyards, the credit union took on the mission of providing financial services to its underserved members. In 1988, Guadalupe Centers reached out wanting to bring those services to the west side of Kansas City. The merger marked the beginning of a new era, as KC Terminal Guadalupe Center Federal Credit Union emerged. The credit union's primary focus was to assist local communities in achieving their financial goals and aspirations.
As the KC Terminal employees began to transition, it prompted a change in the credit union's name. It was renamed to Guadalupe Center Credit Union while remaining affiliated with the Guadalupe Center until 2022. Then, in 2022, a significant milestone was achieved as KC Unidos Federal Credit Union officially moved to its independent location at 2130 Jefferson St and rebranded itself to represent the two cities it serves in Kansas and Missouri. The credit union's name has evolved, but its unwavering commitment to its members and the provision of essential services has remained constant.
A standout feature of KC Unidos Federal Credit Union is its dedication to serving the Latino community. All credit union staff are bilingual, making it easier for Spanish-speaking members to access financial services. Moreover, the credit union welcomes members who may not have a Social Security Number but possess an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). These members qualify for the same services and rates as other members, emphasizing inclusivity.
Over the years, the credit union has grown exponentially and now serves over a thousand members across two different states. Membership eligibility is primarily through affiliation with the Guadalupe Center or the KC Terminal Railway, but the credit union is actively exploring opportunities to expand its field of membership, extending its reach in both Kansas and Missouri.
At the heart of KC Unidos Federal Credit Union's mission is the firm belief to help its members achieve personal financial success through a variety of financial services, offering benefits and advantages beyond what is typically available. The credit union offers a wide range of financial services, including checking and savings accounts, loans for various purposes, certificates of deposit (CDs), money market accounts, fixture loans, and mortgage loans through its partnership with Pivot Lending Group. It also provides additional services such as car warranties, detailed warranty, and gap coverage.
KC Unidos Federal Credit Union has a rich history of financial inclusion, growing from its modest beginnings to become a pivotal institution in the Kansas City area. As it continues to expand its field of membership and evolve its services, it remains steadfast in its commitment to serving its members and the community at large, providing a beacon of hope and support for all.
